Digitals

In the context of fashion modeling, “digitals” (often also called “polaroids” or “natural light photos”) are a set of simple, unretouched photographs and sometimes short videos of a model taken in natural light. They serve as a crucial tool for agencies and clients to see a model’s natural appearance without professional hair, makeup, styling, or elaborate posing.

Think of them as a model’s raw, unfiltered representation.

Here’s a breakdown of what “digitals” typically entail:

Why are “digitals” important?

In essence, “digitals” are the industry standard for providing a clear, natural, and current visual representation of a fashion model to potential clients and agencies. They are a fundamental part of a model’s portfolio and are essential for getting work.

While the terms “digitals” and “snaps” are often used interchangeably and the specific requirements can vary between agencies. However, the general understanding is that digitals are a more formal and comprehensive set of natural photos and videos, while snaps are a more casual and immediate way to show a model’s current look.

If an agency asks for “digitals,” they likely expect a more standardized set of photos and possibly a video with measurements. If they ask for “snaps,” they’re probably looking for a quick and recent representation of how the model looks right now, often without the need for a professional setup.

It’s always best for a model to clarify with their agency what their specific requirements are when they request either “digitals” or “snaps.”
